Rogue One Review

Certificate: 12A
Running time: 134 minutes
Directed by: Gareth Edwards.

What's it about: A stand-alone spinoff story set in the Star Wars universe. A group of rebels set out to steal the plans to the Death Star - the Empire's greatest and deadliest weapon.

The verdict: Possibly one of the most anticipated films of the year, Rogue One doesn't disappoint. It has a great score, some truly awesome shots and makes jaw dropping use of revolutionary CGI. That's not to say it isn't without flaws. The characters, although intriguing, aren't as fully developed as I would've liked and as a result I found them less likeable than other characters from the Star Wars franchise. Some of the acting is a little wooden in places as well.

However where the film fell down for me in regards to characterisation, it certainly made up for it in its effective use of tone. There was humour and laugh out loud moments, mostly provided by K2SO the new droid, but there were also much darker elements as well.

For Star Wars fans, this has definitely been a film worth waiting for. There are Easter eggs aplenty and the appearance of lots of iconic characters. Finally, for me, there was one outstanding scene which I absolutely loved and may very well be one of my favourite Star Wars scenes of all time!

Should you watch this film? Yes! It's a must if you're a Star Wars fan and even if you're not, it's an entertaining and action packed sci-fi. It's worth going just to get a Death Star popcorn tub! Plus it's a perfect film to watch on the big screen.
